Abstract In 1999, 2,472 motorcyclists were killed and an additional 50,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States -- 8% more than the 2,294 motorcyclist fatalities and 2% more than the 49,000 motorcyclist injuries reported in 1998. More than 100,000 motorcyclists have died in traffic crashes since the enactment of the Highway Safety and National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. Additional statistics on motorcyclist involvement in traffic accidents in 1999 and motorcyclist use of helmets are provided in this traffic safety fact sheet.
