Abstract The Connecticut Department of Transportation annually collects roughness data for the entire state highway system. The data are obtained via an ARAN system and are provided in the form of IRI units processed through a quarter-car-algorithm. Research was undertaken to determine the smoothness of various functional classes of highways and to determine factors affecting IRI values. This report presents a series of analyses designed to document trends in IRI data and to quantify the effects of various factors on IRI data. The data universe is comprised of four years of IRI data, obtained from the state highway system in Connecticut. Analysis samples were selected based on input from the Connecticut Department of Transportation staff to document factors affecting IRI of direct importance to the Department.
