| Abstract | The 2001 Report to the American People presents the Federal Highway Administrations (FHWAs) crucial role in the nations surface transportation network: from super-smooth pavements to sophisticated software; from the completion of arteries that carry millions each week in the cities to road building in rural areas across America. FHWA is in each of these locations and hundreds more. Transportation affects every person in our country. A safe, accessible, affordable, and reliable transportation system is vital to every American. This report explains how the FHWA has worked with others over the past year to plan, build, preserve, and operate the nation's transportation system. The FHWA has contributed to new construction and reconstruction projects, the preservation of federal and Indian lands, the building of quiet pedestrian bridges, improvements to bridge superstructures, and analyses of safety barriers. In each of the agencys activities, the FHWA has worked with its partners to preserve and enhance the nation's transportation system and help to grow a stronger America.
