Abstract Safety is a major goal of the National ITS Program. To promote safety, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) funded a series of Field Operational Tests to evaluate two low-cost emergency and assistance communications and rapid response devices and supporting services. This type of mayday service allows a motorist to report an incident to a service center which alerts a service provider who dispatches aid to the scene. Mayday services can meet the national ITS goal of improving safety by “improving [emergency, medical] and roadway service response, reducing the number of fatalities and the severity of injuries resulting from a collision, and reducing the number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions secondary to an incident.“ The purpose of this Technical Memorandum is to document and analyze the controlled field testing of the Puget Sound Help Me (PuSHMe) project conducted in Seattle, Washington. The intent of the controlled field testing was to concurrently develop and evaluate the procedures for training and conducting the two operational and five specific tests for both systems.
