Abstract In support of the Federal Aviation Administration, the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) is conducting an evaluation of a laser based system concept called SOCRATES to determine its possible application in detecting potentially hazardous meterological and wake turbulence phenomena. SOCRATES technology uses a laser beam to detect sound in the atmosphere. SOCRATES technology is based upon the modulation of the phase of a reflected laser beam due to the induced change of the index refraction of the propagating medium by an acoustic signal.
