Abstract Technology was developed for determining delta sup 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (I) and its major metabolite 11-nor-delta sup 9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (II) in human blood plasma utilizing high pressure liquid chromatography (hplc)-ultraviolet (uv) detection. The methods were found to be capable of determining 10 ng of I or II in 1 ml of human plasma. A third type of assay method was developed for identifying in human saliva one of the major constituents of marijuana, cannabinol (III). Results indicated that III photolytically converted to a highly fluorescent compound in the absence of air. Using this technique, a limited study of marijuana smoker's saliva and saliva from non-marijuana smokers to which I and III had been added was conducted. This study demonstrated that 1 ng/ml of III can be detected in saliva. /Abstract from report summary page/
