Abstract This report summarizes the results of a study sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and conducted by The University of Michigan's Highway Safety Research Institute. It is a condensed version of a more detailed report, which is contained in a separate volume. The objective of the study was to review, evaluate, and summarize the existing knowledge on alcohol and highway safety in the United States. This report describes what is presently known about the role of alcohol in highway crashes and what has been done to reduce crash losses believed to be caused at least in part by alcohol. The report projects the problem of alcohol-related crashes over the next ten years, suggests what is needed in response to the problem, and recommends priorities for future research.
