Abstract Eight vehicles were instrumented to permit travel distance and fuel consumption to be measured. Following the collection of baseline measures, three different systems were provided to feed back distance and fuel information to drivers: manual, a weekly trip log filled out by drivers; instrumented, an in-car device displaying the information; and mediated, a system in which information was summarized and discussed with drivers. Results disclosed that approximately 70% of trips involved one-way distances of three miles or less. This greatly exceeds estimates of short trip travel obtained from drivers elsewhere. The introduction of feedback did not cause a reduction in either the number or proportion of short trips, nor was there any improvement in average mpg. Failure to achieve an effect is attributed to the drivers' failure to perceive a need for further increases in fuel efficiency, given the ready availability of fuel at the time the study was conducted. /Abstract from report summary page/
