Abstract The eight papers in the volume describe analyses of the effectiveness and use of adult seat belts, based on traffic accident data. All eight were written between January 1984 and May 1988. The topics addressed include front seat belt effectiveness (estimated separately for states with vs. without a seat belt use law, for drivers vs. right-front seat passengers, for occupants of cars vs. pickup trucks, and by crash direction and accident year), rear seat belt effectiveness, and issues in estimating belt effectiveness from accident data. The principal accident data sources are the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), the National Crash Severity Study (NCSS), and the National Accident Sampling System (NASS). /Abstract from report summary page/
