| Abstract | The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) commissioned the research firm of Schulman, Ronca & Bucuvalas, Inc. (SRBI) to conduct the 1996 Motor Vehicle Occupant Safety Survey. Between November 4, 1996 and January 5, 1997 SRBI conducted a total of 8,210 telephone interviews among a national population sample. The percentages provided in the report are weighted to accurately reflect the national population of drivers age 16 or over. This report is a follow-up to the 1994 Motor Vehicle Occupant Safety Survey, thereby permitting comparisons of the public's attitudes and behavior regarding seat belts between 1994 and 1996. As in the 1994 survey the 1996 version asked drivers and non-drivers about their use (or non-use) of seat belts in the vehicle they usually drive; and their knowledge and attitudes toward seat belt laws and enforcement. Finally, the survey gathered trend data on key items from 1994 and 1996 to explore possible changes in behavior between the two years. /Abstract from report summary page/ |
