Abstract In April 2003, Intercity Transit, in Olympia, Washington, embarked on a project to improve its radio communications capabilities and add appropriate advanced transit technologies to assist in the management of its fixed route and Dial-A-Lift (Paratransit) operations and to enhance passenger services. Following a needs assessment study, which considered Intercity Transits needs and required elements of the Thurston County Regional ITS Architecture, and the development of a project plan, a technical specification was developed for the procurement of an Advanced Communication System (ACS). Proposals were solicited, evaluated, and a contract executed with Orbital TMS in August 2005 for the implementation of the ACS. The system, which included an updated and expanded radio communications infrastructure and comprehensive CAD/AVL and Smart Bus technologies was implemented, installed, and tested, and subsequently accepted by Intercity Transit in September 2007.
