Abstract Noise pollution is a growing concern in the United States. A major contributor of highway noise is at the tire-pavement interface, which means that quieter pavements could lead to reductions in traffic-generated noise. The Federal Highway Administration, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and National Cooperative Highway Research Program sponsored a scanning study of quiet pavement systems used in Europe to reduce traffic noise.
