Abstract During 1983, 42,584 men, women, and children died in motor vehicle traffic accidents. That's more than 116 people per day. This is a 3.1 percent decline from the 1982 death toll of 43,945, and a 16.7 percent decline from the 1980 death toll of 51,091. Someone died on the Nation's highways every 12.3 minutes on average throughout 1983. More than 46 percent of all accidental deaths in the U.S. during 1983 occurred on the Nation's highways.
