Abstract The safety, reliability, and efficiency of the National Airspace System depend upon the men and women who operate and use it. Aviation human factors research is the study of how these people function in the performance of their jobs as pilots, controllers, or maintenance and ground-support personneL Increasing automation and system complexity are placing new and different demands on staff of the nation's air transportation system. Concern over human performance in safety has been raised in Congress, industry, and the academic community. Aviation safety areas which have been the subject of recent attention include both the air traffic control and the cockpit aspects of the system.
