Abstract This document is a compilation of proceedings and lecture material on human performance capabilities that was presented to FAA flight deck certification personnel. A five-day series of lectures was developed to provide certification specialists with information on fundamental characteristics of the human operator that are relevant to flight deck operations. The series was designed to proceed from the presentation of basic information on human sensory capabilities, through human cognition, to the application of this knowledge to the design of controls and displays in the automated cockpit. The initial lectures were prepared and presented by published academic researchers. The later ones were presented by senior human factors practitioners employed by major American airframe manufacturers.
