Abstract The 1992 Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities for the first time collected data for the communications, electric, gas, and sanitary service industries. In addition, the 1992 census expanded coverage of transportation industries to include passenger transportation, air transportation, and pipeline transportation of petroleum products. The data cited in this Summary of Findings represent establishments of firms with payroll only. Nonemployer data are presented in a separate report of this series Nonemployer Statistics (UC92-N-1). For transportation industries previously covered by the 1987 Census, data for 1992 show that the trucking and courier services industry in the United States had revenues of $135.4 billion, an increase of 37.6 percent over the 5-year period. Establishments in water transportation had revenues totaling $29.2 billion, an increase of 41.5 percent, while revenues of travel agents totaled $7.0 billion and arrangers of freight and cargo totaled $9.2 billion, which were increases of 33.4 and 39.3 percent, respectively.
