Abstract This report consists of the proceedings of the Methods and Metrics of Voice Communication Workship organized by the FAA-Civil Aeromedical Institure, NASA-Ames Research Center and Armstrong Laboratory-brooks Air Force Base, held May 13-14, 1994 in San Antonio, Texas. The goal of the meeting was to further our understanding of voice communications in aviation operations by convening a group of language researchers to discuss their experiences with current methods, tools, approaches, etc. The participants came from academic, government and military laboratories, as well as private industry, and their collective expertise included applications conducted in a variety of field, laboratory and simulation environments. This Proceedings is presented in 3 parts: (1) presentations on discourse and acoustic processes, (2) 'demonstrations' of software aids for collecting, coding and analyzing communication data, and (3) an appendix of related supplementary materials and reprints from other publications. Because language researchers share many issues and problems in the development of appropriate and effective methods and metrics, the goal of the workshop was for the attendees to learn from each other's experiences and expertise and to make these insights available to others.
