Abstract This document presents an overview of light rail transit, an urban transit alternative which has the potential to help fill the need for flexibility in public transportation. Existing and proposed U.S. and Canadian light rail transit systems are described with a historical perspective. The technical components and service characteristics of this mode are analyzed. The document also deals with a number of planning and implementation issues, including economics of operation, and various environmental and social concerns.
