Abstract Highway geometric design and traffic operations are based in part on consideration of vehicle characteristics. However, many of the current highway design and operational criteria are based on passenger car characteristics, even though truck characteristics may be more critical. The study of which this report is part involved a review of existing data on truck characteristics and the use of those data to assess the appropriate geometric design and traffic operational criteria to accommodate trucks. The appendixes presented in this volume document detailed investigation of six aspects of design and operational criteria for trucks. These are: (1) truck braking distances, (2) horizontal. curve design to reduce truck rollovers, (3) truck offtracking, (4) truck performance on grades, (5) intersection sight distance requirements for trucks, and (6) cost-effectiveness methodology for assessing the need to change current criteria to accommodate trucks.
