| Abstract | Prior to the advent of large-scale commercial STOL service, some challenging navigation and guidance problems must be solved. Proposed terminal area operations may require that these aircraft be capable of accurately flying complex flight paths, and in some situations, maintaining a time of arrival envelope at waypoints along these paths (4-D guidance capability). The report discusses problems that arise in performing 4-D guidance and presents the results of an initial investigation of two candidate 4-D guidance schemes that are based on the aircraft having a limited amount of protected airspace for maneuvering. Preliminary analysis and simulation results are presented and future work on the 4-D guidance of STOLS is outlined. (Author) |
