Abstract In February 1969, as the frequency of hijacking of U.S. air carrier aircraft was rising to an all-time high, the Federal Aviation Administration established a multi-disciplinary Task Force on Deterrence of Air Piracy. The work of the Task Force in developing an airline passenger pre-boarding screening system and other actions to deter hijacking is summarized. The screening system combined a behavioral profile with a metal-detecting magnetometer to identify those persons who could be potential hijackers. The value of the epidemiological method and the multi-disciplinary approach to problems of the magnitude and complexity of hijacking is emphasized.
