Abstract This document presents the results of a study to determine the feasibility and cost effectiveness of the use of heat/smoke/fire sensors and automatic extinguishing systems in rail transit vehicles. Work presented includes: a survey of major rail transit systems to determine their fire experience, a survey of available hardware, determination of placement, review of cost effectiveness, and an outline of a testing program to validate conclusions of the study.
