Abstract The results of experimental efforts established the feasibility of the detection of railway wheel plate cracks by an ultrasonic pulse echo testing technique from the tread surface. Feasibility and test sensitivities were established using artificial notches in a flat plate test reference and in full-size wheels. Concepts for manual inspection of stationary wheels and the automatic testing of moving wheels are described. Recommendations for further development are included.
