Abstract Currently, strategies are being examined with regard to their potential for mitigating the negative impacts of the surface transportation sector on the environment. The focus of this study is to evaluate an ITS (intelligent transportation systems)-based strategy that involves providing route guidance to travelers. The objective of this route guidance is the minimization of emissions and a reduction of or fuel consumption, as opposed to the traditional objective of minimizing travel times. Specifically, this study conducts an assessment, using a real-world case study, of the likely environmental benefits of environmentally-based route guidance (green routing). Results indicate that such routing could result in significant reductions in emissions, but that this may come at the expense of increased travel time.
