Abstract The bolt-hole cold-expansion process has been applied to railroad rail in laboratory tests and has demonstrated a potential for the reduction of rail-bolt-hole-failure incidence. Limited field tests also have been conducted and are currently under long-term evaluation. Because the process is not common to the rail industry, this procedures manual has been prepared to assist in process implementation. The procedures manual describes the process, and provides instruction and recommendations for field application, and establishes the requirements for bolt-hole and tool-size relationships.
