Abstract This report presents the background, current activities, and future plans for the Urban Rail Noise Abatement Program. This program, sponsored by the Office of Technology Development and Deployment of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) was initiated in 1972 and has been technically managed since its inception by the Transportation Systems Center. The problem of urban rail noise and vibration is described and the rationale for the UMTA funded program is given. The body of the report presents a definition of the program objectives, a discussion of the program organization, and a description of past, current, and future program activities. Major accomplishments of the program to date are listed in the final section.
