| Abstract | This report presents the results of an assessment of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) vehicle fire hardening. The report assesses the overall effort to improve the fire safety of the current BART vehicles through the removal of prospective ignition sources, the substitution of more fire-resistant materials, the addition of a special fire-resistant coating on the under surface of the vehicle floor, and the placement of fire stops at strategic places in the walls and ceilings. Specifically, this assessment responds to ten concerns on these improvements that were expressed by the California Public Utilities Commission. Conclusions and recommendations pertaining to the fire-hardening program are presented in this report. The authors point out that the fire-hardening program will not eliminate fire and smoke incidents, but it will minimize the effect of such incidents. It is recommended that BART implement the proposed program as soon as it is practical to do so. |
