Abstract The report evaluates a carpooling program in operation in the Boston, Massachusetts area from August, 1973 through August, 1974. The program, entitled the WBZ/ALA Commuter Computer Campaign, was the first program in the nation to promote and organize carpooling on a regional scale. It consisted of a free computer matching service for prospective carpoolers supported by an intensive multi-media promotional effort. The evaluation was structured around a two-pronged survey effort. The WBZ/ALA Follow-Up Survey was administered to a sample of program participants to determine participant demographic and travel characteristics; their reasons for wanting to carpool; the extent of carpool formation as a result of, or independent of, the WBZ/ALA program; and participant experiences and attitudes toward the program. The Eastern Massachusetts Survey, the second survey, was designed to measure the penetration of the WBZ/ALA Program as well as provide data on the level of carpooling in the region and the characteristics and attitudes of carpoolers, noncarpoolers, and potential carpoolers.
