Abstract This report covers first the methods presented in the literature for the stress analysis of railroad track components and results of a variety of validation tests. It was found that a formula can yield deflections and bending stresses in the rails of longitudinal-tie and cross-tie tracks which agree for design purposes with track test results if coefficients are properly chosen. This is followed by a review and discussion of the methods for determining these coefficients. The report concludes with recommended analyses and test methods for the determination of stresses in the rail-tie structure
