| Abstract | Timed transfer is a transit operating strategy in which vehicles from different routes are routed and scheduled to meet simultaneously at common stops to facilitate no-wait or minimum-wait passenger transfers. Timed transfers are being used primarily in medium-density areas, where transit demand may be too low to support high-frequency transit service on a system of intersecting routes. This report examines timed transfer systems to gain a better understanding of their applications and services. The report describes various U.S. and Canadian timed transfer services, alternative transit options and the areas best suited to timed transfer. The effects of timed transfer on transit providers, transit users and the community and an evaluation of timed transfer services, ridership and costs, are included. The most complex multiple focal point timed transfer bus services are emphasized and are examined in the three case studies of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Boulder, Colorado, and Portland, Oregon. Where possible, implications and conclusions are drawn from these experiences for the benefit of others interested in implementing similar services. |
