Abstract The chemical and physical properties of diesel fuel are reviewed along with their relationships to the fuel economy and emissions of diesel powered automobiles and light trucks. The fuels considered include both conventional and alternative diesel fuels. Additives are surveyed and their impacts on combustion and overall engine performance are discussed. The fuel economy potential of future lubricants is investigated, particularly (1) upgraded mineral oils, (2) synthetic oils, and (3) colloidal suspension in mineral oils.
