Abstract A major variable in both the cost of any new transportation system and rider acceptance of the system is the ride quality of its vehicles. At this time, there exists no set of objective criteria which would allow the transportation system designer to determine what level of ride quality would be considered acceptable by a wide variety of potential passengers. The purpose of the study was to establish statistically acceptable techniques for the development of methods for relating physical measures of vehicle vibration to passenger estimates of ride quality.
