Abstract This report provides an assessment of the potential for spark ignition engines passenger cars and light trucks. The assessment includes: tradeoffs between fuel economy and emissions; improvements in spark ignition engine efficiency; improvements in engine parasitics; improvements due to transmissions; effect of aerodynamic drag and tire rolling resistance on fuel economy; effect on performance and fuel economy of weight and axle ratio; lubricant improvements; impact of fuels; and noise considerations.
