Abstract The study addresses precast concrete lining systems. Existing precast concrete systems designed or constructed in Europe, Japan, and the United States are evaluated. With these as a point of departure, designs for lining systems applicable to the specific conditions encountered in the United States are developed. A comparative cost analysis is made between the linings designed in the study, one existing precast concrete design and two in fabricated steel. Appreciably lower costs are found for all of the concrete liner designs when compared to those in fabricated steel. Water sealing systems are discussed and recommendations for the development and testing of sealing details are made. Guidelines for dissemination of information about, and for the implementation of the systems, are presented.
