Abstract A number of nondestructive testing procedures are being investigated in depth to determine the feasibility of each individually, and in combination, to detect and identify defects in tires that can lead to failure. The facility, equipment, and data handling methods are described. Typical data obtained by X-ray, holographic, infrared, and ultrasonic inspection methods are presented. Subsequent reports will present additional informatin on the nondestructive method, their ability to detect defects, and the relationship between defects and tire failure.
