Abstract A method of detecting faults in tires by means of vibration measurements was investigated. A tire-roll-tester rig was modified to accommodate a vibrator and a detector to measure the response across the tire. Different kinds of faults could be identified under various experimetnal conditions. But it was not found possible, up to the point where the present tests had to be abandoned, to distinguish the faults from other disturbances in the tire. Shortage of funds prevented some corrective tests to be carried out. The modes of vibration of a tire were defined and a method of visualization of the nodal patterns was devised.
