Abstract This study assesses subsurface exploration methods with respect to their ability to provide adequate data for the construction of rapid transit, soft-ground bored and cut-and-cover tunnels. Geophysical and other exploration tools not now widely used in urban underground construction are investigated, their potential is discussed, and performance specifications and ideas for future development are presented. The effect of geotechnical variations on construction costs is modeled, and the effect of the prior knowledge of variation, including preliminary designs, specifications, cost estimates, and development plans, are formulated. Volume Two contains Appendixes A-F.
