Abstract This report presents the results of a fire test study on selected composite materials containing carbon fibers that are planned for use, or that have a high potential for use, in automobiles and other vehicles. The study objectives were to determine the quantity and distribution of carbon fibers released during exposure of the composites to fires. The test data indicated that autombile fires, per se, are unlikely to be the cause of serious risk from single-fiber release. However, the possibility of automobile fires occurring in combination with other factors, such as wind and fire fighting, rescue, and disposal operations could result in additional fiber release.
