Abstract This report introduces the principles of mchanized tunneling and provides detailed guidelines for practical application. The subject is introduced with a detailed review of technical aspects and terms relating to mchanized tunneling. It discusses the mechanics of rock cutting and implications on machine performance. Two related issues -- the stability of underground openings and rock mass classification for tunneling -- are presented and serve to fmailiarize the reader with aspects other than rock cutting that affect machine tunneling. All this forms the basis for a comprehensive description of the entire mechanized tunneling system and its operations.
