| Abstract | The Morgantown People Mover (MPM) is an automated two-mode (schedule and demand) transit system that consists of a fleet of electrically powered, rubber-tired, passenger-carrying vehicles operating on a dedicated guideway under computer control. The present operational MPM system consists of 5 stations, a vehicle maintenance facility with a small test loop, a central control facility, 73 electrically powered, rubber-tired vehicles. This report describes the Collision Avoidance System (CAS) design used for the current (1980 Phase II) MPM system. It presents historical data leading to the current design. The report also includes results of experience with the CAS, plans for system improvements, and recommendations for future designers of such systems. Identification of safety and operability requirements led to a unique implementation of a proven safety concept--block occupancy control. Problems encountered and the design solutions which evolved are discussed with emphasis upon fail-safe features. The resulting CAS design is assessed and found to be extremely safe. Possible improvements and extensions are discussed. Shorter headway and bi-directional operations are found to be feasible. This report contains a glossary of terms and many charts illustrating the elements of the MPM system. |
