Abstract Aerial photographs are useful in various studies of highway traffic behavior. From a timed sequence of aerial photographs of a fixed highway area, one can find for each vehicle crossing the area data on position, velocity, trajectory (i.e., entrancing, lane changing, and exiting) and type (i.e., car, truck, or bus). In this project, an interactive system consisting of a computer, computer-controlled flying spot scanner, and a graphics tablet is utilized to significantly automate the data reduction process. This report describes the state-of-the-art of data reduction and the system being developed. The pertinent computer programs developed to date are documented in detail.
