Abstract Principal characteristics of existing data acquisition practices and instrumentation methodologies have been reviewed to identify differences which are responsible for difficulties in comparing and interpreting structural crash test data. Recommendations are made for standardizing these differences which include non-uniform practices in transducer location, data acquisition and presentation of plotted data. A method which has the potential to analytically describe and 'filter' test results by fitting a polynomial curve having limited frequency reproduction capability to digitized crash test data is proposed. The role of structural crash test data for use in computer simulation model development is also reviewed and its role in current and advanced simulation models is defined based on model input/output characteristics.
