Abstract The study was undertaken for the calibration and analysis of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) passenger data to be used as an input to the main operational performance simulation model that is being developed. A survey was made of the number of passengers using the Highland Branch of the MBTA Green Line. All of the PCC streetcars on that line were to be replaced by new light rail vehicles within the year. Analysis of the data confirmed a "market share" theory for the stations and suggested that fairly sparse sampling could yield estimates of total passenger movement acceptable at the 90 percent confidence level.
