Abstract A review of the present level of understanding of the basic thermodynamic, fluid dynamic, and chemical kinetic processes which affect the fuel economy and levels of pollutant exhaust products of Diesel, Stratified Charge, and Spark Ignition engines is presented. Key areas are identified where insufficient understanding currently prevents the rational development of internal combustion engines with improved performance. A research plan designed to gather the needed data is presented. /Author/
