Abstract This report deals with the risk analysis methodology for oil spills from the oil transfer systems in deepwater ports. Failure mode and effect analysis in combination with fault tree analysis are identified as the methods best suited for the assessment of comparative risk from different technical alternatives. The necessary methodology and analytical expressions are developed and their application is demonstrated in some general sample calculations. Basic data sources are listed, and the quality of the data is discussed. It is shown that the available data are not sufficiently complete for quantitative calculations of the risk for the entire system. Comparative calculations, however, can be made, and a systematic qualitative examination of the system is possible.
