Abstract If an accident occurs, effective strategies must be available to minimize the effects in terms of loss of life, injury, and property damage. The Volpe Center's work in this area is reviewed in this report. It ranges from occupant protection strategies to providing guidance on how to respond to accidents in a way that minimizes their negative effects. The results of these activities contribute to developing safer vehicles in all transportation modes and support the Department of Transportation's role in establishing appropriate regulations that protect the safety of travelers.
