Abstract The U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, with the support of the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center is examining the technical and economic feasibility of tube transportation as an alternative to increasing capacity for long-haul trucking on the Nation's highways. Tube transportation is a class of transportation systems in which close fitting capsules or trains of capsules move through tube between terminals. Pneumatics is a consideration in such systems even if they are not pneumatically powered. All historic systems were pneumatically powered and often referred to a s pneumatic capsule pipelines. Recently it has been proposed that such systems might be more productive if powered by another means; use of linear induction motors is one recommendation.
