| Abstract | Operational experience in cities of Western Europe and North America suggests that light rail is a viable transit alternative for U.S. cities as well. This state-of-the-art review seeks to establish a common level of understanding of light rail transit among planners, community leaders and decision makers. Contemporary planning concepts of light rail are reviewed and a description is provided of guideways, stations, hardware, operations and costs.
