Abstract The special transportation needs of older Americans which have come to be recognized in recent years will continue in the next century. This report is a descriptive analysis of a variety of volunteer programs which provide transportation to elderly and disabled persons. By examining 13 such programs, it was possible to understand and describe how such programs operate, what clients they serve, what volunteers they utilized and how the volunteers were recruited. Most volunteer programs are organized as either a nonprofit organization or as a government unit. Transportation is generally provided to some or all of the following: Medical facilities, nutrition centers, senior centers, social service agencies, and schools. Most volunteer transportation services are available only on weekdays and clients must request service at least 24 hours in advance. Vehicles are generally owned by the individuals who serve as drivers and are compensated for the fuel they consume. Extraordinary liability insurance must be provided. About two thirds of the drivers are male and are retired persons. Most perform the work because of the satisfaction they receive in helping others. A series of recommendations are made.
