Abstract Due to overcrowding at Hanging Lake, the Volpe Center performed a capacity study for the White River National Forest. This capacity study examines the visitation and environmental constraints of Hanging Lake parking lot, trail, and site to develop three scenarios in which the U.S. Forest Service staff will use to determine the appropriate level of use at the site. Using data gathered from various data sources, the capacity study compares actual conditions during the 95th percentile week and compares to reductions in visitation using a proposed capacity management system. The analysis includes a series of videos that demonstrate the flow of visitors to the site.
